Despite more points being dropped Neil Lennon somehow holds on………..for now.

Alas, another weekend and another calamity.

Celtic dropped more points yesterday as the quest for ten became all the more daunting to the point of looking nigh on impossible.

With Rangers having won 4-0 up at Ross County earlier in the day we now find ourselves 13 points and 21 goals behind.

A veritable mountain then.

A picture that says a thousand words as the Parkhead pain continues.

Performance-wise it was more of the same as Neil Lennon went with one-up front and three centre backs at home against St.Johnstone in a must-win game.

Right from the off there was a complete lack of urgency, hunger and creativity as we continue to play with little width and ping the ball about aimlessly in front of the opposition.

Chances were at a premium though Tom Rogic did miss a header that looked easier to score and Odsonne Edouard fluffed a good opportunity when released through by Callum McGregor as he bizarrely tried to finish with the outside of his foot.

In the second half, we somehow became even more blunt up top and then on the 79th minute, the visitors took a rather predictable lead as Frimpong went missing from his right-back role which allowed Stevie May to fire it across the face of goal setting up substitute Chris Kane to slide it home.

We did get a fluke equaliser four minutes later as sub Mohamed Elyounoussi headed home with a backwards header that he knew little about but that was it.

Celtic 1 St Johnstone 1: Neil Lennon on the brink as Rangers move 13 points clear in title race
There looked like hope but it was a false dawn.

There was no big push or cavalry charge in an attempt to get a winner.

Instead, the game just fizzled out.

So what with us already out of both the Champions and Europa League as well as the League Cup we’re now a mile behind in the league.

I genuinely thought another poor result would finally bury Neil Lennon but he seemed pretty unflustered in the post-match interview and blamed the players feeling sorry for themselves for the recent record-breaking bad run of form.

That’s two wins in twelve now and no home wins in five.

Unprecedented stuff.

As I write this it’s 3.55pm so safe to say that if the board have decided to dispense with the manager’s services it won’t be happening today and they are unlikely to do so before Thursday’s dead rubber final Europa League match against Lille at Celtic Park.

The next match of relevance is once again at home next Sunday as we entertain Kilmarnock.

I’d say it’s a must-win match but with Peter Lawwell at the helm of the good ship Celtic who knows?!

There was, of course, the embarrassing sight of temporary fencing being erected outside the ground the night before but in the end, it was much ado about nothing.

A few individuals hurled abuse as the team bus left but that was it.

In the end the fencing wasn’t needed.

It would appear that apathy has now set in amongst the support with a lot of the frustration and anger vented somewhat inappropriately the weekend before perhaps the final act of defiance.

Anyway, it’s going to take a collapse over at Ibrox combined with a sudden 180-degree turn in form by us for the season to reignite.

Neil Lennon believes he’s the man to restart the fire though just about nobody else does including his former teammates Alan Thompson and Chris Sutton who said as much on Twitter.

I guess we just have to watch this space as we’re literally powerless to do anything else whilst what should have been the season of our dreams turns into a complete and utter nightmare.

  1. Celtic, have gone back to old days of Kelly board, we all thought those days are long gone.
    Lawwell, is now Kelly
NL, Did a brilliant job after BR, he shouldn’t been given job permanently.
    Substandard players
    Loyalty to has beens.
    Players not fit.
If he loses the SCF, then he would lose all respect he has earned, And so the BOARD.
