Celtic 1-1 Shakhtar Donetsk: Celtic can’t claim a Champions League win and bow out of Europe early.

Another disappointing night in what has been an educational but ultimately fruitless Champions League campaign.

Once again Celtic’s high press saw them dominate most of the first half against the Ukrainian side though chances were thin on the ground.

Giakoumakis did get his maiden Champions League goal though with a predatory finish ten minutes from halftime in a game Celtic had to win in order to maintain any slight chance of staying in Europe.

In the second half though the visitor’s star man Mykhailo Mudryk scored another virtuoso cracker even better than the one he netted against us in Warsaw.

Yes, Jurnaovic should have done better but the reality is sometimes you just have to tip your cap.

And it could have been worse as Danylo Sikan missed an open goal when it looked easier to score after more incredible build-up play by Mudryk.

Not long after Kyogo should have restored our lead but as we’ve already witnessed in this tournament the Japanese talisman really seems to struggle at this level to replicate his domestic scoring form.

Anyway, we had some other chances but couldn’t score and that’s our European campaign for this season petered out officially.

Both of the Shakhtar performances probably deserved better especially the away one.

Indeed on reflection, if we’d won that we’d be more or less guaranteed a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League but alas it was not to be.

Hopefully, we win the league and roll straight back into the group stages again next year with a stronger more seasoned team and lessons learned.

We shall see.
